Total foreign investment falls by 75 percent in seven months

KARACHI: Total foreign investment into Pakistan has declined by 75 percent to $1.042 billion during July – January 2018/2019 when compared with $4.138 billion in the corresponding period of the last fiscal year, State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) said on Monday.

The total foreign private investment fell by 38.2 percent to $1.042 billion during first seven months of the current fiscal year as compared with $1.687 billion in the corresponding months of the last fiscal year.

Under this head the foreign direct investment (FDI) slipped by 17.6 percent to $1.45 billion during July – January 2018/2019 when compared with $1.76 billion in the corresponding period of the last fiscal year.

The investment into equity market fell sharply by 454 percent to outflow of $409 million during first seven months of the current fiscal year as compared with the outflow of $74 million in the same period of the last fiscal year.

However, debt instruments of $2.45 bililon that was taken during the last fiscal year had also been included as foreign investment.
