The government has approved long-delayed promotions for 170 members of the Karachi Port Security Force, ending a 24-year stagnation in career progression, the maritime affairs ministry said on Tuesday.
The decision was announced by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry during a high-level meeting in Karachi, where Karachi Port Trust (KPT) Chairman Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed briefed participants on measures taken to resolve the long-pending issue affecting port security staff.
Officials said the promotions mark a major administrative breakthrough, ending more than two decades of career stagnation for the security personnel responsible for safeguarding one of Pakistan’s busiest maritime gateways.
Minister Chaudhry hailed the move as a step toward institutional reform, urging authorities to ensure transparent and timely promotions based on tenure and performance.
‘This should not be an isolated step but a sustainable process,’ he said, adding that improved human resource practices are essential to enhance morale and operational efficiency at key national infrastructure.
KPT officials said all procedural requirements had been completed in accordance with regulations after years of delays due to administrative complexities, expressing confidence the decision would strengthen port security operations and boost workforce morale.
Karachi Port Trust is a key state-run entity managing Pakistan’s main seaport, handling significant cargo flows and trade activity. The government has been focusing on improving governance, transparency and efficiency across maritime institutions to support economic stability and investor confidence in the logistics sector.
