Rahmanullah Gurbaz of Afghanistan dazzled with a thrilling century, complemented by Azmatullah Omarzai’s all-round brilliance, as they powered their team to a five-wicket victory over Bangladesh in Sharjah, clinching a 2-1 win in the ODI series.
Chasing a target of 245, Afghanistan found themselves under early pressure when Bangladesh’s pace spearheaded by Mustafizur Rahman dismantled the top order. However, Gurbaz and Omarzai steadied the innings with a 100-run partnership that ultimately turned the tide. Gurbaz struck a fiery 101 off 120 balls, featuring seven sixes and five boundaries, laying the foundation for the chase in the decisive match. Omarzai (70 not out) combined aggression with composure and, alongside Mohammad Nabi, guided Afghanistan to the finish line in 48.2 overs.
Reflecting on his journey, Nabi, named Player of the Series, shared his thoughts on retirement and future aspirations. “After the last World Cup, I considered retiring, but playing one more Champions Trophy would be amazing,” said Nabi, hinting at his desire to contribute further to Afghan cricket. The next ICC Champions Trophy will be held in 2025 in Pakistan, a tournament Nabi hopes to participate in to offer guidance to Afghanistan’s younger talents.
Earlier, Bangladesh started confidently, with openers Tanzid Hasan and Soumya Sarkar adding 53 runs within the powerplay. However, Afghanistan’s bowlers struck back swiftly, reducing Bangladesh to 72-4. Captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz, playing his 100th ODI, stabilized the innings with Mahmudullah. The duo stitched together a resilient 145-run stand off 188 deliveries, lifting Bangladesh to a competitive total of 244. Mahmudullah, narrowly missing a century, top-scored with 98 off 98 balls, while Mehidy contributed a measured 66. Omarzai proved crucial with the ball, finishing with 4-37 in seven overs, dismantling Bangladesh’s late order.
The victory marked Afghanistan’s third consecutive ODI series win this year, solidifying their growing reputation in international cricket. With Gurbaz’s explosive batting and Omarzai’s reliable contributions in both departments, Afghanistan has emerged as a formidable force.
As the team celebrates another series victory, Afghanistan’s players continue to demonstrate their resilience and ambition on the international stage, setting high expectations for the years ahead.
