Barcelona, April 13, 2025 – FC Barcelona may be without Spain international left-back Alejandro Balde for up to three weeks after the young defender sustained a muscle injury during Saturday night’s narrow 1-0 away victory over Leganés. The setback could see Balde miss several crucial fixtures in both domestic and European competitions.
The 20-year-old, who has been a key part of Barcelona’s defensive unit this season, was forced to leave the pitch in the first half after a clash with Leganés forward Adria Altimira. TV footage showed Balde gesturing toward the bench and mouthing the words “I’m injured,” prompting immediate concern from the medical team and coaching staff.
Barcelona confirmed on Sunday morning that medical examinations revealed a distal injury to Balde’s left hamstring. The club added that his return would depend on the progression of his recovery, leaving his participation in upcoming matches in doubt.
The injury means Balde will definitely miss Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League quarterfinal second-leg against Borussia Dortmund. Barcelona travels to Germany with a commanding 4-0 lead from the first leg. In addition, he is expected to be absent from La Liga clashes against Celta Vigo and Mallorca.
The biggest blow for both club and country could come on April 26, when Barcelona faces archrivals Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final at Estadio de La Cartuja in Seville. The match is not only pivotal for Barca’s trophy ambitions but also closely followed in Spain as it features many of the nation’s top talents, including Balde.
Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick will now turn to Gerard Martin, who has effectively deputized for Balde in recent months. Martin is expected to play a more prominent role during Balde’s recovery period.
With 37 starts in 42 appearances this season, Balde has established himself as one of the most reliable young defenders in Spain. His absence will be felt not only by the club but also by national team selectors monitoring his fitness ahead of upcoming international fixtures for Spain.
