Mercedes teenager Kimi Antonelli overtakes Lewis Hamilton at Silverstone to claim Sprint victory and strengthen his advantage in the drivers’ standings.

Mercedes youngster Kimi Antonelli delivered an impressive performance to secure victory in the Sprint race at the British Grand Prix on Saturday, defeating Lewis Hamilton at Silverstone and increasing his lead in the Formula 1 drivers’ championship.

The 19-year-old Italian showcased patience and tactical brilliance throughout the race, claiming his latest Sprint triumph after overtaking Hamilton in the closing stages of an intense battle. The victory allowed Antonelli to extend his championship advantage to 43 points over Mercedes teammate George Russell.

Hamilton, racing in front of his home supporters, started from pole position and maintained the lead after successfully defending against Antonelli during the opening laps. Behind them, an exciting contest unfolded as McLaren’s Lando Norris, Mercedes’ George Russell, and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen exchanged positions in a fierce battle for the remaining podium places.

Antonelli remained close to Hamilton while carefully managing his battery deployment. His strategy paid off on lap eight when he launched a perfectly timed attack on the Hangar Straight.

Exiting Turn Four with strong momentum, the Mercedes driver capitalized after Hamilton ran slightly wide before using his remaining energy boost to complete the decisive overtake approaching Stowe Corner.

Following the race, Antonelli explained that he had deliberately conserved his battery power while waiting for the ideal opportunity to make his move. He said the opening laps were highly competitive, with both drivers pushing hard, but he knew his chance would come once he activated his overtake mode.

The Italian added that Hamilton defended strongly by using his energy boost earlier in the lap, allowing Antonelli to save his own deployment until Turn 13 before using everything available to complete the pass.

Despite remaining within touching distance after losing the lead, Hamilton could not match Antonelli’s pace in the final laps. The seven-time world champion acknowledged that the strong headwind along the back straight made defending increasingly difficult, while Antonelli’s superior battery management enabled him to close the gap rapidly.

Hamilton admitted he pushed as hard as possible to maintain more than a one-second advantage but was unable to prevent the Mercedes driver from surging past with greater speed. Antonelli ultimately pulled away comfortably to secure victory, reinforcing his status as the championship leader and further strengthening Mercedes’ title ambitions as the Formula 1 season continues.
