Apple may remove Action Button from future iPhones

A new leak suggests Apple could combine the Action Button and Camera Control into a single physical key on iPhones launching in the second half of 2027.

Apple may be preparing another hardware change for its upcoming iPhone lineup, with a new leak suggesting that the company plans to remove the dedicated Action Button and integrate its functions into the existing Camera Control button.

According to a tipster on Chinese social media platform Weibo, Apple is considering combining the two physical buttons into one. The change could arrive with new iPhone models launching in the second half of 2027, potentially reducing the number of buttons on future devices.

Apple first introduced the Action Button with the iPhone 15 Pro series, replacing the traditional mute switch. The customizable button allows users to assign different functions, including activating the flashlight, opening the camera, launching shortcuts and switching Focus modes.

Under the reported design, the Camera Control button would take over these capabilities. A single press would reportedly open the Camera application, while a long press would activate the shortcut or function previously assigned to the Action Button.

The tipster has specifically clarified that the proposed change involves removing the Action Button rather than eliminating the Camera Control. This means the camera-focused physical control would remain, but its functionality could expand to accommodate additional shortcuts.

However, the leak does not identify which iPhone models will receive this change. It remains uncertain whether Apple intends to introduce the redesigned button across its entire 2027 iPhone lineup or restrict it to selected models.

The possible modification would represent a change in Apple’s physical button layout while retaining the customization features introduced with the Action Button.

Meanwhile, earlier reports have suggested that Apple is testing more significant design changes for its next-generation Pro models. These reportedly include quad-curved display designs in prototype devices, potentially indicating a broader hardware redesign.

Whether the proposed button consolidation will accompany these display changes is currently unknown.

As with other early supply chain and tipster reports, the information should be treated as a rumour until Apple officially confirms its future iPhone plans.
