Lionel Scaloni says Argentina’s experience in high-pressure knockout matches will help keep the squad calm as they prepare for a crucial World Cup semifinal against England.
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni believes his team’s extensive experience in major international tournaments will be a valuable asset as the reigning world champions prepare to face England in the World Cup semifinal on Wednesday.
The highly anticipated encounter marks Argentina’s fifth semifinal appearance across their last five major tournaments, highlighting the consistency and success the national team has achieved under Scaloni’s leadership. Having lifted the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022, Argentina now aim to secure a place in another final and continue their impressive run on the global stage.
Speaking ahead of the crucial match, Scaloni emphasized that while experience does not guarantee success, it helps players remain composed in high-pressure situations. He noted that repeated appearances in the latter stages of major competitions have allowed the squad to approach important fixtures with confidence and calmness.
The Argentina manager also addressed the challenge posed by England’s star-studded lineup, particularly captain Harry Kane and midfield sensation Jude Bellingham. Scaloni praised both players, describing them among the finest talents in world football. However, he stressed that Argentina would remain focused on its own strengths while developing strategies to limit England’s attacking threats.
Scaloni revealed that tactical decisions regarding the starting lineup had not yet been finalized. He explained that the coaching staff is evaluating different options to ensure the team can effectively counter England’s strengths without compromising its own style of play.
A key part of Argentina’s game plan will be maintaining possession and reducing opportunities for England to launch dangerous counterattacks. Scaloni acknowledged England’s pace, technical quality, and ability to create one-on-one situations, making defensive organization a priority for his side.
Since taking charge in 2018, Scaloni has transformed Argentina into one of international football’s most successful teams. He guided the Albiceleste to the Copa America semifinal in 2019 before winning the continental title in 2021 and 2024, alongside the nation’s World Cup triumph in 2022.
Despite the team’s remarkable achievements, Scaloni insists the players remain grateful for reaching another semifinal. While satisfied with their journey so far, he affirmed that Argentina will give everything on the pitch in pursuit of a place in the World Cup final.
