    Business community welcomes appointment of new Army chief

    KARACHI: Business community has welcomed the appointed of General Syed Asim Munir as the new Army chief of the country.

    In a message on Thursday Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) Patron-in-Chief SM Muneer, President Faraz-ur-Rehman, CEO of KITE Limited Zubair Chhaya, Senior Vice President Nighat Awan, Vice President Muslim Mohammadi along with the Executive Committee members welcomed the appointment of General Syed Asim Muneer as Chief of Army Staff and Lt General Sahir Shamshad Mirza as Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee by the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

    SM Muneer acknowledges the services of the outgoing Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa and said that he made Pakistan proud as the army chief.

    Paying tribute to Qamar Javed Bajwa, SM Muneer said that the credit goes to him for the historic achievements of removing the country from the gray list of FATF, and hunting down India’s fighter jet invading Pakistan territory.

    SM Muneer said that Syed Asim Munir is the best choice for Army Chief and has an excellent professional career.

    President KATI Faraz-ur-Rehman said that the newly elected Army Chief General Asim Muneer was top in seniority among the four-star generals, he headed important departments like Corps Commander Gujranwala, ISI and Military Intelligence and showed high service.

    President KATI said that the new army chief is a credible figure in the Pakistan Army and the nation has hopes high for him. Faraz-ur-Rehman further said that General Asim Muneer will be the first Army Chief to be awarded the sword for superior performance during training, while he set a new example by memorizing the Holy Quran at the age of 38 as a colonel.

    Rehman further said that after the best decision by the Prime Minister of Pakistan, there is hope that the political crisis will end in Pakistan and the country will move towards economic stability.

    Zubair Chhaya, CEO of KITE Limited welcomed the appointment of General Syed Asim Muneer as Chief of Army Staff and Lt. Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Army Staff and said that Lt. Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza has been related to Sindh. Mirza fought and eliminated the terrorists in North Waziristan. Lt. Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza also played an important role in intra-Afghan negotiations.

    Pakistan stocks end flat amid political uncertainty

    KARACHI: Pakistan stock ended flat on Thursday owing to ongoing political uncertainty and appointment of Chief of the Army Staff (COAS).

    The benchmark KSE-100 index of Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) ended 42,903 points from previous day’s closing of 42,880 points, showing an increase of 23 points.

    Analysts at Arif Habib Limited said that another range-bound session was witnessed at the PSX during the day.

    The market opened in the green zone but due to the ongoing political uncertainty, investors chose to book profits at higher levels.

    Given President’s final approval for the COAS appointment remained pending, investor confidence remained lackluster.

    This resulted in lower market participation. Volumes on the mainboard remained sluggish, with third-tier stocks continuing to lead in terms of volume.

    Sectors contributing to the performance include Fertilizer (+19.6 points), Tobacco (+17.3 points), Cement (+14.7 points), Inv. Banks / Inv. Cos. / Securities Cos. (+11.8 points), Power Generation & Distribution (+9.8 points).

    Volumes increased from 138.6 million shares to 153.1 million shares (+10.5 per cent DoD). The average traded value also increased by 14.0 per cent to USD 26.18 million as against USD 23.0 million.

    Stocks that contributed significantly to the volumes are WTL, TRG, HASCOL, JSBL, and DFML.

    PKR slumps to dollar amid SBP tight monitoring

    KARACHI: Pakistani Rupee (PKR) slumped against the US dollar on Thursday amid tight monitoring of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) related to currency transactions.

    The exchange rate recorded a decline of 11 paisas in rupee value to end at PKR 223.92 against the dollar from previous day’s closing of PKR 223.81 in the interbank foreign exchange market.

    Currency experts said that political uncertainty and weak economic indicators had pressured the exchange rate. They said that a day earlier an international report pointed out that Pakistani rupee was on the risk.

    It is important to note that the SBP took various measures to prevent unnecessary outflow of the greenback for giving support the local unit.

    These measures included tight monitoring on the exchange companies by checking day to day affairs related to transactions.

    Besides, the SBP also imposed restrictions to limit the cash foreign currency up to $5,000 for taking out Pakistan per person per visit.

    The currency experts said that the measures taken by the SBP were not enough as Pakistan’s external sector was facing huge challenges.

    Latest investment data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) revealed the foreign direct investment plunged by 52 per cent in first four months of the current fiscal year.

    The current account deficit recorded contraction in the first four months of the current fiscal year it swelled when compared with the previous month.

    Pakistan needs foreign inflows on urgent basis to avoid balance of payment crisis. The foreign exchange reserves of Pakistan fell sharply during past few months making it difficult for the government to fulfill its foreign repayment commitments.

    Foreign exchange (forex) reserves of Pakistan were at $13.796 billion by week ended November 11, 2022 as compared with $13.721 billion a week ago i.e. November 04, 2022.

    The country’s foreign exchange reserves hit all-time high of $27.228 billion on August 27, 2021. Since then the foreign exchange reserves have declined by $13.432 billion.

    The official foreign exchange reserves of the State Bank nominally increased by $3 million to 7.96 billion by week ended November 11, 2022 as compared with $7.957 billion a week ago.

    The foreign exchange reserves held by the central bank witnessed a record high at $20.146 billion by week ended August 27, 2021. Since then the official reserves of the SBP dropped by $12.185 billion.
