Marvel Studios has officially begun production on the highly anticipated film Avengers: Doomsday. The movie, which marks the return of the Russo brothers as directors, is currently being filmed in London.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting this latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which is set to release in theaters on May 1, 2026.
The announcement of the cast lineup sparked excitement and controversy, with the inclusion of Tenoch Huerta Mejía drawing particular attention.
The actor, known for his portrayal of Namor in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, faced sexual misconduct allegations in June 2023, which he denied as “false and completely unsubstantiated.”
Despite this, Marvel Studios has assembled an impressive ensemble of heroes and villains for Avengers: Doomsday. Returning fan favorites include Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man, and Letitia Wright as Shuri.
Additionally, the film introduces new characters and fresh faces to the MCU. Vanessa Kirby joins as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing, and Simu Liu as Shang-Chi. The cast also features Florence Pugh as Yelena, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Lewis Pullman as Sentry, and Danny Ramirez as Falcon.
Further boosting anticipation, Marvel confirmed that Avengers: Doomsday will see the return of Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, and Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler. Other X-Men stars include Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, James Marsden as Cyclops, and Channing Tatum as Gambit.
Perhaps the most surprising casting choice is Robert Downey Jr., who returns to the MCU not as Tony Stark but as the formidable Doctor Doom. Meanwhile, Pedro Pascal has been cast as Mr. Fantastic, adding to the excitement surrounding the film.
Originally announced at San Diego Comic-Con, Avengers: Doomsday promises to be a cinematic event that will redefine the Marvel Universe. With its massive ensemble cast and the return of beloved characters, the film is set to be a blockbuster hit when it debuts in 2026.
