Marvel’s upcoming blockbuster sees strong fan demand ahead of December 18 release as Avengers and X-Men unite against Doctor Doom
Avengers: Doomsday has generated major early excitement among fans, recording $16.5 million in advance ticket sales within its first day of availability, signalling strong anticipation for Marvel Studios’ next major cinematic event.
The impressive opening comes after Marvel launched ticket sales alongside the release of the film’s first official trailer, which revealed the highly anticipated crossover between the Avengers and X-Men as they face the threat of Doctor Doom.
Premium format demand drives early ticket sales
The early ticket sales figures are particularly notable as tickets were initially available only through premium formats across around 1,000 domestic cinemas.
When Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theatres on December 18, the film will expand to more than 4,000 cinemas across North America, significantly increasing its availability to audiences.
According to studio sources, several premium-format screenings scheduled for December 17 and 18 have already sold out, with exhibitors adding additional showtimes during the Christmas holiday period to meet demand.
The advance ticket figures do not include IMAX screenings, as Dune: Part Three will reportedly hold exclusive access to the format following its release.
Marvel introduces Infinity Vision premium experience
To highlight the growing popularity of premium cinema formats, Marvel Studios has introduced Infinity Vision, a certification programme for theatres that meet specific technical standards.
The initiative aims to provide audiences with enhanced viewing experiences through larger screens, brighter visuals and improved sound quality.
Avengers: Doomsday expected to deliver huge opening
Early ticket sales indicate that Avengers: Doomsday could become one of the biggest box office releases of the year.
The film’s first-day advance sales are reportedly double those of Deadpool & Wolverine, which opened with $211 million domestically and eventually earned around $1.3 billion worldwide.
However, it remains uncertain how strongly the film will perform during its holiday opening weekend, particularly given changing audience trends and increased competition in the theatrical market.
Marvel aims to revive major crossover success
The release marks Marvel’s return to a large-scale ensemble superhero event following the record-breaking success of Avengers: Endgame, which became one of the highest-grossing films in history.
Since then, Marvel Studios has experienced mixed box office results, with its strongest post-pandemic performances coming from major crossover films such as Spider-Man: No Way Home and Deadpool & Wolverine.
The studio is also preparing another major release with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, continuing its focus on popular superhero franchises.
Avengers: Doomsday and Dune 3 set for major box office clash
The simultaneous release of Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three has been described by fans as “Dunesday”, with both films expected to create one of the biggest box office weekends ever recorded.
The event could rival historic opening weekends achieved by films including Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
