Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) has finally embraced winter with the season’s first snowfall and rain, ending a two-month-long dry spell that had impacted the region. The scenic upper reaches, including Neelam and Leepa Valleys, experienced heavy snowfall on Saturday, with temperatures dropping sharply. Locals reported that the nights have become exceptionally cold, making it challenging to cope with the sudden chill.
Rawalakot and its surrounding areas also witnessed heavy snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms, adding to the picturesque beauty of the landscape. However, parts of southern AJK, including Mirpur Division, are still awaiting rainfall to break the prolonged dry conditions.
The extended dry weather had taken a toll on the region, triggering health issues such as allergies, flu, and fever among residents. It also led to a decrease in water levels in rivers and dams, raising concerns about water shortages. Fortunately, the recent snowfall and rains are expected to replenish these water sources.
The Meteorological Department has predicted further rainfall in the plains and additional snowfall in the mountainous areas, signaling that the cold weather is here to stay. While the change in weather has brought much-needed relief from the dry spell, it has also introduced a set of new challenges for daily life.
Residents have welcomed the snowfall, which has not only refreshed the region’s natural beauty but also promised a boost to tourism in the coming weeks.
