Bangladesh Target T20 Breakthrough Against New Zealand

In a highly anticipated three-match T20 International (T20I) series set to kick off on December 27, Bangladesh is gearing up to face New Zealand, eyeing a breakthrough T20 victory on Kiwi soil.

After a historic ODI win against the hosts, snapping a 19-match winless streak, Bangladesh is now determined to carry that momentum into the shortest format, where they have faced nine consecutive defeats against the Black Caps.

Expressing confidence ahead of the series, Bangladesh’s head coach, Chandika Hathurusingha, emphasized the positive impact of their recent ODI triumph in Napier, the same venue for the upcoming T20Is. “A good win always boosts confidence, and we want to repeat our success, irrespective of the format,” remarked Hathurusingha on the eve of the first T20I.

Bangladesh, riding on a successful T20I campaign in 2023, boasts an impressive record of nine wins out of 11 matches. Notable series victories against England (3-0), Ireland (2-1), and Afghanistan (2-0) have positioned Bangladesh as a formidable T20 side.

With 11 matches preceding the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, the series against New Zealand becomes a crucial opportunity for Bangladesh to fine-tune their combinations and solidify player roles.

“We have 11 games and the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) ahead, but as a national team, we are focusing on defining our combinations and player roles for the World Cup,” explained Hathurusingha. Despite time constraints, he underscored the importance of aligning plans and roles within the available period.

While Bangladesh has demonstrated commendable performances in T20Is, securing only nine victories in the Men’s T20 World Cup’s history remains a challenge.

The team, eager to rewrite history, aspires to overcome past hurdles and make a lasting impression in the upcoming T20 World Cup, aiming to surpass their previous best of reaching round two.

The series against New Zealand not only serves as a battleground for T20 supremacy but also as a crucial stepping stone in Bangladesh’s journey towards T20 World Cup success.
