The actor praises his ex-wife’s parenting skills and says shared custody and choosing Los Angeles-based projects help him stay close to their three children.

Ben Affleck has jokingly admitted that he struggles to match ex-wife Jennifer Garner’s parenting skills, praising the actress for being an exceptional mother to their three children.

The 54-year-old actor made the remarks in a preview clip from his interview with Sunday TODAY host Willie Geist, which is scheduled to air in full on NBC on Sunday, October 11.

“Their mom is spectacular, and always makes me feel like I’m coming up a little short,” Affleck said.

He explained that he tells his children he is doing about 75 per cent as well as their mother, only for them to suggest he deserves a score of around 40 per cent.

“I’m maxing out. B+,” the actor joked.

Affleck and Garner, also 54, share three children: Violet, 20, Seraphina, 17, and Samuel, 14. The couple married in June 2005 and separated a decade later.

Despite their separation, Affleck spoke warmly about his former wife, highlighting the importance of maintaining a respectful relationship while raising their children.

“I respect her. I’m grateful for her,” he said. “I think the most important thing is, you know, having that mutual respect, being able to get along with that person.”

Garner is currently dating technology executive John Miller.

Earlier in the week, Affleck also expressed his gratitude towards Garner in an interview with Variety, describing his current family life as particularly fulfilling.

The actor explained that the children spend one week with him and the following week with their mother, allowing both parents to remain actively involved in their lives.

“They have a great thing with their mom,” he said, adding that although challenges would inevitably arise, he was enjoying this stage of his life.

Affleck also revealed that his family responsibilities influence his professional decisions. He prioritises projects based in Los Angeles so he can remain close to his children and avoid missing important years of their lives.

“I’m divorced, I have shared custody, and I don’t want to miss these years,” he said. “My kids are here, and their life is flying by.”

His comments offer a glimpse into how Affleck and Garner continue to navigate co-parenting, with the actor emphasising gratitude, mutual respect and the importance of being present for their children.
