Bringing elites into tax net vital for economic viability: PM

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Imran Khan, on Wednesday, underscored the significance of bringing elites into the tax net as a crucial step for the economic viability of Pakistan.

Speaking at an award ceremony dedicated to recognizing the top taxpayers in the country, the prime minister highlighted the need for a shift in mindset regarding the creation of wealth and stressed the importance of promoting a tax culture.

Addressing the audience, Prime Minister Imran Khan acknowledged that there was a pressing need to change the prevailing mindset concerning wealth creation. He emphasized that incorporating elites into the tax net was not only essential for a fair distribution of the tax burden but also vital for the economic sustainability of the nation.

The prime minister expressed concern over the limited number of return filers in the country, stating that there were only 1.7 million individuals fulfilling this obligation. He noted that this number was insufficient to bear the financial responsibilities for the entire population of 210 million in Pakistan. To address this disparity, Imran Khan called for a concerted effort to broaden the tax base by bringing more individuals, especially elites, into the tax net.

During his speech, Prime Minister Imran Khan recognized and appreciated the consistent contributions made by significant taxpayers to the country’s economy. He emphasized the critical role that large taxpayers play in supporting the financial stability and development initiatives of Pakistan.

To ensure transparency and accountability, Prime Minister Imran Khan directed the authorities to guarantee that the funds contributed by substantial taxpayers were utilized responsibly and not spent on the extravagance of the ruling elite. This directive reflects the government’s commitment to effective fiscal management and the responsible allocation of resources for the benefit of the broader population.

The prime minister’s call for a change in the mindset surrounding wealth creation aligns with the government’s broader economic reforms aimed at creating a more equitable and sustainable financial system. Encouraging a tax culture and expanding the tax net to include elites are viewed as crucial steps to reduce economic disparities and foster a more inclusive and robust economic environment.

The award ceremony dedicated to acknowledging top taxpayers serves as a recognition of the pivotal role played by individuals and entities in contributing to the economic growth and stability of Pakistan. Prime Minister Imran Khan’s statements highlight the government’s determination to create a fair and transparent tax system that promotes fiscal responsibility and contributes to the overall well-being of the nation.
