BYD’s upcoming Ocean Series MPV has been spotted charging in China, featuring a conventional body design, sliding rear doors and advanced driver-assistance technology.
BYD’s first Ocean Series multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) has been spotted testing in China, offering an early look at the upcoming model ahead of its anticipated launch by the end of 2026. The camouflaged prototype was photographed charging at a BYD Flash Charger station, revealing several details about its exterior design and technology.
According to Chinese automotive media, the vehicle features a conventional MPV body, traditional door handles, visible B-pillars and sliding rear doors. One of its most noticeable features is a LiDAR sensor mounted on the roof, suggesting that the upcoming model could offer advanced driver-assistance capabilities.
Production Model Differs From Ocean-V Concept
The production-oriented prototype appears significantly different from the Ocean-V concept unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show in April 2026. The concept showcased an experimental five-seat cabin featuring swivelling front seats, a retractable steering wheel and a sliding central display.
Its interior was designed to support entertainment, relaxation and camping activities. However, the latest test vehicle adopts a more conventional exterior layout, indicating that BYD may have prioritised practicality for the production version.
The company has yet to confirm whether the new MPV is directly based on the Ocean-V concept. Its final seating arrangement and interior equipment also remain undisclosed.
Roof-Mounted LiDAR Hints at Smart Driving Features
The roof-mounted LiDAR unit is another important detail revealed by the spy photographs. BYD already offers LiDAR-based technology on selected vehicles equipped with its DiPilot driver-assistance systems.
Although the sensor suggests the Ocean MPV could feature a more advanced smart-driving package, the automaker has not confirmed its specifications or the exact functions that will be available.
Possible Technical Links With BYD M9
Reports suggest the Ocean MPV could share a technical platform with BYD’s Dynasty Series M9, also known as the Xia in China. However, the company has not officially verified this information.
The M9 uses a plug-in hybrid system combining a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with an electric motor. Its specifications cannot yet be attributed to the upcoming Ocean model.
Launch Details Awaited
The BYD Ocean MPV is expected to expand the company’s existing MPV portfolio alongside the M9 and premium Denza D9.
Pricing, dimensions, powertrain options and production specifications have not been announced. More information is expected as BYD moves closer to the vehicle’s anticipated year-end launch.
