Spy shots reveal Yangwang models inspired by the Rolls-Royce Phantom and Cullinan as BYD expands its ultra-luxury vehicle lineup.
BYD’s premium Yangwang brand appears ready to expand its presence in the ultra-luxury automotive segment, with two heavily camouflaged vehicles recently spotted during testing in China. The upcoming sedan and SUV reportedly draw inspiration from the Rolls-Royce Phantom and Cullinan, respectively.
Yangwang has already attracted attention with the U8 SUV’s advanced driving capabilities, including its ability to perform a tank turn, while the U9 Xtreme supercar has established the brand’s performance credentials. The company is now reportedly preparing vehicles aimed at customers seeking greater luxury and road-going comfort.
The brand’s lineup includes the U7 sedan, while several of its other models are priced above 1 million yuan, equivalent to approximately $150,000. Higher-end versions and customisation options can increase the final cost further.
New Sedan Shows Rolls-Royce-Inspired Design
Spy images of Yangwang’s upcoming sedan reveal a large vehicle with an extended wheelbase and a profile reminiscent of the Rolls-Royce Phantom. The test car features rear-hinged coach doors, while its large wheels appear to take inspiration from Maybach designs.
An air canister visible beneath the rear bumper suggests the possible use of BYD’s DiSus-A air suspension system. The technology could be adapted to provide a smoother and more comfortable ride in the larger luxury sedan.
Chinese automotive reports suggest the model could adopt a pillar-less body structure, allowing easier access when the front and rear doors are opened together. However, this design could create challenges in maintaining structural rigidity.
A load-bearing battery mounted beneath the vehicle may help address those concerns. The sedan also appears to feature a conventional metal roof rather than a panoramic glass panel, potentially supporting greater body strength.
Luxury SUV Moves Beyond Off-Roading
The second model, a large SUV, was reportedly photographed during high-temperature testing in Turpan. Unlike the rugged U8 and U8L, the new vehicle appears to feature a lower, more road-focused design influenced by the Rolls-Royce Cullinan.
It uses low-profile luxury wheels rather than traditional off-road tyres. A roof-mounted LiDAR sensor is also visible, suggesting advanced driver-assistance capabilities.
The SUV could receive BYD’s DiPilot 600 system, although the presence of additional LiDAR sensors remains unconfirmed. Its powertrain is another mystery, with the e3 platform emerging as a possible option for improved high-speed efficiency.
If Yangwang shifts its focus toward road performance, the new SUV could offer a more refined alternative to the U8 family while strengthening BYD’s challenge in the global luxury vehicle market.
