Alcaraz claims his third ATP title of 2026 after overcoming Jiri Lehecka in straight sets.

Carlos Alcaraz successfully defended his Japan Open title on Tuesday, defeating Czech Republic’s Jiri Lehecka 7-6(4), 6-4 in the final to claim his third championship of the 2026 season.

The victory marks another important step in Alcaraz’s return to top form following a lengthy absence caused by a wrist injury. The Spaniard spent around five months away from competitive tennis before making his comeback at the US Open in August, where he progressed to the quarterfinals.

The Japan Open triumph is Alcaraz’s third title this year, adding to his earlier victories at the Australian Open and Qatar Open. The ATP 500 tournament also helped strengthen his confidence after his return from injury.

Alcaraz did not make the ideal start to the final, losing his serve in the opening game. However, the world number three quickly responded, breaking Lehecka back in the sixth game with a powerful backhand to level the first set at 3-3.

Both players struggled with consistency at different stages, sending the opening set into a tiebreak. Alcaraz remained composed under pressure and secured the tiebreak 7-4 to take the lead.

The Spaniard then raised his level in the second set and eventually found the decisive breakthrough. He broke Lehecka’s serve to move ahead 4-3 before maintaining control and serving out the match to complete the victory.

The title is Alcaraz’s 27th career trophy and makes him the first player since Pete Sampras in 1993 and 1994 to win consecutive Japan Open championships.

The victory also provided a significant confidence boost for Alcaraz, who had faced uncertainty during his recovery. His successful return and latest title suggest he is regaining the rhythm and belief that characterized his performances before the injury.

Alcaraz’s Japan Open success now gives him momentum heading into the remaining tournaments of the 2026 season, as he continues his bid to strengthen his position among the world’s leading players.
