Chery Introduces Lifetime Battery Warranty Following New EV Safety Standards

Automotive

Automaker strengthens customer confidence by offering lifetime battery protection as China’s strict new battery safety regulations take effect.

Chery Automobile has announced a lifetime battery warranty for the first owner of all its new energy vehicles (NEVs) equipped with Rhino battery packs.

The move comes as the country begins enforcing its toughest-ever battery safety regulations, designed to improve consumer confidence in electric vehicles.

The new warranty applies to privately owned battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) fitted with Rhino batteries.

Besides the battery pack, the warranty also covers electric motors and electronic control units for the vehicle’s first non-commercial owner.

Warranty Strengthens Customer Confidence

According to Chery, the initiative reinforces its commitment to vehicle safety and reliability under the latest national battery safety requirements.

The company stated that if a vehicle experiences thermal runaway caused by a manufacturing defect in the power battery, rather than human-related factors, affected customers will receive a replacement vehicle of the same model.

Rhino battery technology is currently used across four Chery-owned brands in China, including Chery, Exeed, Jetour, and iCar, highlighting the automaker’s broader strategy to strengthen battery safety across its expanding electric vehicle portfolio.

China Implements Toughest Battery Safety Standard

The announcement follows the implementation of China’s new mandatory GB38031-2025 battery safety standard, which officially came into effect on July 1, 2026. Industry experts describe the regulation as one of the strictest EV battery safety standards introduced globally.

Under the updated rules, battery packs must not catch fire or explode during a two-hour observation period after thermal runaway. In addition, smoke must not enter the passenger compartment within five minutes after a warning is issued.

The regulations also require batteries to survive three impacts from a 30mm steel ball carrying 150 joules of energy without igniting or exploding. Furthermore, battery systems must remain free from fire or explosion even after completing 300 fast-charging cycles.

Chery Expands EV Technology Investment

Chery has been accelerating investment in next-generation battery technology as competition intensifies in China’s fast-growing new energy vehicle market.

The company previously introduced a lifetime vehicle warranty across its lineup in 2023, with the latest battery-focused initiative further strengthening its after-sales support.

Looking ahead, Chery plans to commercialize solid-state batteries by 2027 while continuing research into advanced battery technologies through partnerships with leading battery manufacturers CATL and Gotion.

According to China EV DataTracker, the QQ3 EV was Chery’s best-selling electric vehicle in China during May 2026, recording 8,523 deliveries. The compact electric hatchback is also expected to be introduced in international markets under the name Chery Q.
