Beijing, May 21, 2024 – China’s online retail sector continues to thrive, posting an impressive 11.5 percent growth in the first four months of 2024, as reported by Xinhua on Tuesday.
Official data from the Ministry of Commerce highlights a robust expansion driven by emerging market forces and increased consumer spending.
From January to April, China’s online retail sales reached 4.41 trillion yuan (approximately 620.52 billion U.S. dollars), marking a significant year-on-year increase. This growth underscores the strength of China’s digital economy and its pivotal role in sustaining overall economic momentum amid various global challenges.
Breaking down the figures, online retail sales of physical goods surged 11.1 percent year-on-year to 3.74 trillion yuan. This segment alone accounted for 23.9 percent of the nation’s total retail sales of consumer goods, indicating a solid integration of e-commerce into everyday consumer habits.
The Ministry of Commerce also noted a remarkable 25.1 percent year-on-year rise in the consumption of key online services. This surge reflects the growing demand for digital services, including education, entertainment, and professional services, which have become integral to consumers’ lifestyles in the digital age.
In addition to the overall growth, specific categories of digital, green, and health commodities saw rapid increases. This trend highlights a shift in consumer preferences towards sustainable and health-conscious products, driven by heightened awareness and supportive government policies.
April’s data also presented a positive outlook for the online retail sector. Sales of home appliances and furniture grew by 9.3 percent and 12.2 percent, respectively. This growth was bolstered by China’s consumer goods trade-in policy, which incentivizes the replacement of old products with new, energy-efficient models. This policy not only stimulates consumer spending but also aligns with the country’s broader environmental goals.
