The epic fantasy has crossed $1 billion worldwide in just three weeks and is closing in on The Dark Knight Rises.
Christopher Nolan is on the verge of reaching a major career milestone as his latest blockbuster, The Odyssey, continues its impressive run at the global box office.
According to Deadline, the epic fantasy film has surpassed the $1 billion mark worldwide just three weeks after its theatrical release, putting it on course to become Nolan’s highest-grossing film ever.
The Odyssey is now closing in on the record held by Nolan’s 2012 blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises, which earned approximately $1.085 billion worldwide during its theatrical run.
The latest figures show that The Odyssey has generated $429.7 million from the domestic box office, while international markets have contributed a further $570.3 million.
The Odyssey nears Christopher Nolan’s box office record
If The Odyssey overtakes The Dark Knight Rises, it will mark a new commercial high for Nolan, whose filmography includes several major global hits.
The filmmaker has previously directed acclaimed blockbusters such as Oppenheimer, Interstellar, Inception, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises.
Reflecting on the project in an earlier interview, Nolan acknowledged the pressure surrounding the film and described it as a “very nerve-racking” project.
“You work on something a long time, you care about it a lot, but movies belong to the audience,” he said, highlighting the unpredictable nature of filmmaking and audience reception.
What is The Odyssey about?
Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, The Odyssey is an epic fantasy action film based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic of the same name.
The film follows Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, during his perilous 10-year journey home after the Trojan War. Along the way, he encounters legendary figures and creatures including Polyphemus, the Sirens and Circe before eventually returning to his wife, Penelope, in Ithaca.
The film was shot entirely using IMAX film cameras, marking a major technical achievement and giving the ancient saga a vast cinematic presentation.
The Odyssey cast
The star-studded cast includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton and Zendaya.
With its billion-dollar global haul already secured, The Odyssey is now within striking distance of The Dark Knight Rises. If its box-office momentum continues, Nolan could soon have a new highest-grossing film in his career.
