Disney has officially announced that The Princess Diaries 3 is in development, with Adele Lim, taking the helm as director.
Fans of the franchise are eagerly awaiting updates on whether Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews will return, though Disney has yet to confirm their involvement in the project.
A longtime fan of the original films, Lim expressed her excitement to Variety, saying, “As a diehard fan of The Princess Diaries, I’m beyond thrilled to help bring the third chapter of this beloved franchise to life. We’re excited to celebrate its core themes of female empowerment, joy, and mentorship with fans around the world.”
The script is being written by Flora Greeson, while Debra Martin Chase, who produced the first two films, will return for the new installment.
The first two movies, directed by the late Garry Marshall, introduced audiences to Mia Thermopolis, a regular teenager who learns she is the heir to the throne of the fictional country, Genovia.
Since 2022, the development of The Princess Diaries 3 has been underway, and fans have been buzzing about the possibility of Hathaway reprising her role. Last year, Hathaway shared her enthusiasm about the project in an interview with V Magazine, stating, “We’re in a good place. There’s nothing to announce yet, but we’re in a good place.”
Despite her optimism, Hathaway has not officially signed on for the sequel, leaving fans eagerly waiting for more news.
The announcement of Lim as the director has reignited excitement across social media platforms, especially on X (formerly Twitter).
One fan posted, “I’ve been waiting for another Princess Diaries movie my whole life! This is a dream come true!” Another excitedly exclaimed, “We’re getting Princess Diaries 3! I can’t believe it—this is everything!”
With anticipation building, fans can look forward to the continuation of Mia’s journey, but many are still hopeful to see Hathaway and Andrews return to the beloved series.
