Dry Weather Persists; Northern Areas Expect Rain and Snow

Islamabad, November 10, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has released a detailed weather forecast for Monday, November 11, 2024, with expectations of mostly dry conditions across the country. However, certain regions should be prepared for changes in weather patterns, especially in the northern and upper areas.

General Weather Outlook: On Monday, most of Pakistan is expected to experience dry and stable weather. While the plains and urban areas will see mild conditions during the day, temperatures in the hilly and mountainous areas are forecasted to drop, becoming quite cold, particularly in the early morning and nighttime. The PMD advises residents in these regions to prepare for chilly weather as temperatures are expected to remain low throughout the night.

In northern parts of the country, particularly in Gilgit-Baltistan, upper Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and Kashmir, conditions will differ slightly as cloudy skies may develop. A rain-wind and thunderstorm system could bring light snowfall over the high mountains in these regions, adding to the seasonal winter atmosphere.

Rain and Thunderstorm Activity: The PMD predicts that areas such as Gilgit-Baltistan, the upper Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and parts of the Potohar region may see a mix of cloudiness and precipitation. Residents in these regions should prepare for possible thunderstorms, with light snowfall anticipated in mountainous regions. Northeast Punjab might also witness some isolated light rain or thunderstorm activity, especially later in the evening or night.

Smog and Fog Advisory: The forecast also highlights the continued presence of smog, especially in Peshawar and surrounding areas, Islamabad, and Punjab. This persistent smog may reduce air quality significantly and impact visibility on the roads, creating hazardous conditions, especially for those with respiratory issues. The PMD further warns of dense fog in parts of Punjab and other plain areas, particularly during the morning hours. Drivers should exercise caution as visibility may drop drastically.

Synoptic Situation: The PMD explains that the weather patterns are largely influenced by continental air dominating most parts of the country, with a westerly wave impacting the upper regions. This westerly wave is responsible for the increased cloud cover and possible precipitation in the northern areas and is expected to persist through Monday night.

Recent Weather Observations: The past 24 hours saw dry weather across most parts of Pakistan, with cold conditions reported in hilly regions. Smoggy conditions prevailed in many areas of Punjab, leading to dense fog in some parts. The lowest recorded temperatures were in Leh at -02°C, and Gupis and Skardu at 04°C.

In summary, while most of Pakistan will experience dry weather on Monday, upper regions should be prepared for cloudy skies and potential rain or snowfall. Smog and dense fog will remain a concern in certain areas, impacting both air quality and visibility.
