The actor says he wants to explore old-school soul and country influences after his latest Disney song.

Dwayne Johnson has opened up about his musical journey and revealed that he is interested in exploring new sounds following the release of his latest song, Your Dad, featured in Disney’s live-action Moana.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Johnson reflected on his approach to music, joking that he sings from the heart despite sometimes struggling to stay within traditional musical keys.

 “I always like to say I sing from the heart — and I sing in keys that don’t exist. So it’s a good combo,” Johnson said.

The Hollywood star also discussed the musicians who influenced him from an early age, naming legendary artists including Sam Cooke, Elvis Presley, George Jones, Merle Haggard and Johnny Paycheck.

Johnson particularly highlighted Willie Nelson, who gave him a guitar as a birthday gift. He recalled being a huge fan of the country music icon and described receiving the instrument as a memorable moment in his musical journey.

The former professional wrestler acknowledged that he does not consider himself comparable to Nelson as a guitarist, but said the gift remains special to him.

Johnson also grew up surrounded by music in his Polynesian household. His wife, Lauren Hashian, said music was a constant presence during his childhood, with his mother often playing the ukulele.

Hashian also recalled that music remained part of their relationship when they first began dating. The couple would spend time together at home with a karaoke machine, turning their dates into informal singing sessions.

Following Your Dad, Johnson appears keen to experiment further with his musical abilities. He said he would like to explore old-school soul blended with country influences, noting his particular appreciation for classic soul music.

Johnson has already showcased his musical talents through several songs associated with Disney’s live-action Moana, including the popular You’re Welcome.

His latest comments suggest that music could become an increasingly important creative outlet for the actor, who continues to balance his film career with other entertainment ventures.
