Ollie Robinson’s remarkable comeback performance guides England to a 1-0 lead in the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy

England secured a hard-fought 115-run victory over New Zealand in the opening Test of the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy at Lord’s, overcoming challenging conditions and a spirited fightback from the visitors to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

The 150th Test at the Home of Cricket produced drama from the outset, with bowlers dominating on a treacherous pitch that yielded 35 wickets in less than two days of normal playing time.

After being asked to bat first, England were dismissed for just 140, with New Zealand seamer Kyle Jamieson making a successful return to Test cricket by claiming 5 for 62. Harry Brook stood out for the hosts with an aggressive 56, while the remainder of the batting line-up struggled against relentless seam movement.

However, the match marked a memorable return for Ollie Robinson. Recalled to England’s Test side after more than two years away, the fast bowler produced a devastating triple-wicket maiden, dismissing Devon Conway, Kane Williamson and Rachin Ravindra in a remarkable spell. New Zealand closed the opening day on 61 for 6, trailing by 79 runs.

England appeared to be taking control in their second innings, largely thanks to debutant Emilio Gay, who impressed with a composed 57. At 126 for 2, the hosts looked set to build an imposing lead before suffering a dramatic collapse.

Four wickets fell for just one run in 11 deliveries as Gay, Brook, Joe Root and captain Ben Stokes were all dismissed in quick succession. England eventually managed 226 all out, setting New Zealand a target of 254.

The visitors’ chase never gained momentum. Persistent drizzle interrupted play on the final day, allowing only 9.4 overs to be bowled, but Robinson continued to make decisive breakthroughs. He dismissed Rachin Ravindra for eight before trapping Daryl Mitchell lbw for a duck, taking his match tally to seven wickets.

New Zealand slipped to 55 for 5 at stumps, still requiring 199 runs with only five wickets remaining. England’s bowlers completed the job to seal a 115-run victory with more than four sessions to spare.

Robinson finished with outstanding match figures, including 5 for 39 in New Zealand’s first innings, earning widespread praise for a remarkable comeback performance after spending more than two years out of the Test side.

The victory provides England with a timely boost following their Ashes disappointment, while New Zealand will reflect on missed opportunities in a low-scoring contest where every session proved crucial.

England now lead the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy 1-0 and will head into the second Test with renewed confidence after demonstrating resilience and adaptability in testing conditions at Lord’s.
