Hosts make four changes for The Oval clash as Jofra Archer returns and two newcomers earn maiden Test caps.
England have announced their playing XI for the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval, with Jordan Cox and Sonny Baker set to make their long-awaited Test debuts. The hosts have made four changes to the side that claimed a convincing 115-run victory in the opening Test at Lord’s.
The changes come as England look to secure the series and continue their rise in the World Test Championship standings. Experienced fast bowler Jofra Archer returns to the Test arena after his last appearance in the format in December, while Matt Fisher is also back in the side for his first Test outing since making his debut in Barbados in 2022.
Jordan Cox finally gets his opportunity at the highest level after previous injury setbacks delayed his international debut. The Essex batter recently impressed for England Lions and carried that momentum into domestic cricket, scoring a rapid 40 from just 31 balls in the Vitality Blast earlier this week.
Sonny Baker is another fresh addition to the squad and will strengthen England’s pace attack alongside Archer, Fisher and Josh Tongue. The management has opted for a fast-bowling-heavy combination as they seek another victory against New Zealand.
One of the major absentees from the squad is Ollie Robinson. The seamer enjoyed a successful return to Test cricket in the first match after a two-year absence, taking seven wickets. However, an injury has ruled him out of the second encounter.
Joe Root will continue as interim captain in the absence of Ben Stokes. He will lead a batting lineup featuring Ben Duckett, Emilio Gay, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook and wicketkeeper Jamie Smith.
England Playing XI:
Ben Duckett, Emilio Gay, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root (captain), Harry Brook, Jordan Cox, Jamie Smith, Jofra Archer, Sonny Baker, Matt Fisher and Josh Tongue.
England will now aim to wrap up the series with another strong performance at The Oval against New Zealand.
