Fakhar Zaman heroics keep Lahore Qalandars alive in PSL 11 playoff race

Pakistan Super League

Defending champions Lahore Qalandars kept their hopes alive in the Pakistan Super League 11 with a thrilling six-wicket win over table-toppers Peshawar Zalmi in a high-stakes encounter that could define their season.

In a must-win clash, experienced opener Fakhar Zaman led from the front with an unbeaten 58, anchoring a tense run chase as Qalandars hunted down a daunting 200-run target with three balls to spare. The victory lifted Lahore to 10 points in the standings, keeping their playoff dreams alive, though qualification now hinges on other results in the tournament.

Chasing 200, Qalandars suffered an early setback when Mohammad Naeem fell cheaply, dismissed by Khurram Shahzad with just 21 runs on the board. However, Fakhar steadied the innings, stitching together vital partnerships with Abdullah Shafique (25) and Charith Asalanka (33), ensuring the chase stayed on track.

The momentum shifted decisively when Fakhar combined with Sikandar Raza for a quickfire 41-run stand off just 18 balls. Although Raza departed in unusual fashion via a hit-wicket dismissal after scoring 29, Lahore maintained control.

Late fireworks from Daniel Sams, who smashed an unbeaten 35 off just 15 deliveries, proved crucial in sealing the victory. Fakhar, holding one end firmly, ensured the chase never derailed and deservedly earned the Player of the Match award.

For Zalmi, bowlers including Iftikhar Ahmed and Sufiyan Muqeem picked up one wicket each but failed to contain Lahore’s aggressive finish.

Earlier, after being put into bat, Zalmi posted a formidable 199/4 in their 20 overs. Skipper Babar Azam anchored the innings with a composed 59, while New Zealand’s Michael Bracewell delivered a stunning knock of 83 off 45 balls, featuring eight fours and six sixes.

Zalmi’s innings had an early wobble as Shaheen Shah Afridi removed James Vince and Kusal Mendis in quick succession. However, a 94-run partnership between Babar and Bracewell revived the innings, followed by a late flourish alongside Iftikhar Ahmed.

Despite conceding 46 runs, Haris Rauf claimed two key wickets, including that of Babar, helping restrict Zalmi under the 200-mark.

With the tournament entering its final phase, Lahore Qalandars’ fate now depends on the outcome of the clash between Hyderabad Kingsmen and Rawalpindiz. For now, Fakhar Zaman’s brilliance has ensured the defending champions remain firmly in contention for a playoff berth.
