Tax authorities grant taxpayers an additional 15 days following requests from trade bodies and tax bar associations.

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for Tax Year 2026 until October 31, 2026, providing taxpayers with an additional 15 days to complete their submissions.

The latest extension was announced on Thursday through an official circular issued by the tax authority. The decision comes in response to requests from various trade organisations and tax bar associations seeking additional time to meet their filing obligations.

Previously, the deadline had been extended from September 30 to October 15, 2026. With the latest announcement, the FBR has allowed eligible taxpayers another two weeks to submit their income tax returns.

The extension is intended to provide relief to individuals and other taxpayers who were required to file their returns by the original September 30 deadline. The latest notification clarifies that the revised date applies to those whose filing deadline was already extended to October 15 under an earlier FBR circular.

Legal Basis for the Extension

According to the FBR notification, the extension has been granted under Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001. This provision empowers the tax authority to extend statutory deadlines in accordance with the applicable legal framework.

The earlier extension was communicated through Circular No. 3 of 2026-27, dated September 30, 2026. The latest circular further revises the deadline for the same category of taxpayers.

The decision follows representations from business associations and tax professionals who sought additional time for completing the filing process. Such requests commonly arise when taxpayers and advisers require more time to gather financial records, prepare declarations and fulfil reporting requirements.

Taxpayers Get More Time to File Returns

Under the revised schedule, eligible taxpayers now have until October 31, 2026, to submit their income tax returns for Tax Year 2026.

Taxpayers are advised to use the extended period to review their financial information, ensure the accuracy of their declarations and complete any outstanding filing requirements before the new deadline.

The announcement provides additional flexibility for those who could not complete their submissions within the previously extended period. However, the revised date applies to the taxpayers covered by the FBR’s notification, and filers should consult the official circular to confirm their eligibility.

The extension marks the latest adjustment to Pakistan’s income tax return filing schedule for Tax Year 2026.
