FBR launches module for online hearing in audit, assessment cases

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has taken a significant leap into the digital era with the launch of a software platform for conducting online hearings in audit and assessment cases, as announced by an FBR spokesperson on Tuesday.

The newly activated system for e-hearing in audit and assessment cases is now accessible through the IRIS portal. This innovative platform establishes a real-time connection between FBR offices and individuals, allowing hearings to be conducted online. The spokesperson emphasized that these online hearings will be recorded and can be utilized for other legal matters.

Implemented initially at key locations, including the Large Taxpayers Office (LTO) Islamabad, Regional Tax Office (RTO) Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, and Peshawar, the system is expected to streamline the hearing process, making it more accessible and efficient. The FBR has outlined plans for a phased rollout, with the second phase targeting the implementation of this module at other regional tax offices.

Chief Commissioners of Inland Revenue have been instructed to ensure the installation of the required equipment by May 31, 2021, to facilitate the smooth implementation of online hearings. The move aims to transition from traditional, physical hearings to a more advanced and convenient digital format.

The spokesperson highlighted that the FBR’s head office has been granted the authority to join online hearings at any given time, adding a layer of flexibility to the process. This initiative aligns with the broader digital transformation strategy of the FBR and the government’s efforts to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accessibility in public services.

Once fully implemented, this online hearing system is poised to eliminate the need for taxpayers to physically visit tax offices for audit and assessment cases. This development is seen as a welcome change, especially considering the challenges and inconveniences associated with in-person hearings.

In a pivotal announcement, the FBR stated that starting from July 1, 2021, all physical hearings will be phased out entirely. The shift to online hearings is expected to not only simplify the process for taxpayers but also contribute to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the FBR’s operations.

As Pakistan continues to embrace digital solutions, the FBR’s move towards online hearings marks a noteworthy step in modernizing and streamlining administrative procedures. The success of this initiative is anticipated to set a precedent for other government agencies looking to leverage technology for enhanced service delivery.
