First-ever RoRo vessel delivers over 2,000 electric vehicles to Pakistan

M.V. Grande Shanghai docks at Karachi Port Trust, marking a major milestone in Pakistan’s electric vehicle import and logistics sector.

Pakistan has achieved a significant milestone in its automotive and logistics sectors as the M.V. Grande Shanghai, a 220-meter Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) vessel, successfully berthed at the KGTML Terminal of Karachi Port Trust (KPT), carrying more than 2,000 electric vehicles (EVs).

The arrival of the vessel marks the first-ever shipment of electric vehicles to Pakistan through a dedicated RoRo vessel, highlighting the growing importance of sustainable transportation and modern maritime logistics in the country.

According to Karachi Port Trust, the M.V. Grande Shanghai transported over 2,000 EVs destined for the Pakistani market.

The development is expected to support the increasing demand for electric mobility solutions as consumers and businesses gradually shift toward environmentally friendly transportation options.

Unlike conventional cargo vessels that rely on cranes and containers for loading and unloading, RoRo ships are specially designed to carry wheeled cargo, including cars, trucks, buses, and other vehicles.

This innovative shipping method allows vehicles to be driven directly onto and off the vessel, significantly reducing handling time and minimizing the risk of cargo damage.

Industry experts believe that the use of RoRo vessels can improve efficiency in vehicle imports by streamlining port operations and reducing turnaround times.

The successful arrival of the M.V. Grande Shanghai demonstrates Karachi Port’s capability to accommodate large-scale automotive shipments while enhancing overall logistics performance.

The docking of the vessel also reflects Pakistan’s growing integration into global automotive supply chains.

As the country witnesses increasing interest in electric vehicles, efficient import mechanisms are becoming increasingly important to meet market demand and facilitate the transition to cleaner transportation technologies.

Karachi Port Trust described the arrival as a landmark event that reinforces its role as a gateway for international trade and modern logistics.

The successful handling of the vessel underscores the port’s commitment to supporting economic growth, strengthening connectivity, and promoting sustainable development.

With more than 2,000 electric vehicles set to enter the local market, the arrival of the M.V. Grande Shanghai is expected to provide a significant boost to Pakistan’s emerging EV ecosystem and encourage further investment in green mobility solutions.
