Foreign Direct Investment into Pakistan plunges by 44 pc in 7MFY23

KARACHI: The inflow of foreign direct investment (FDI) into Pakistan has plunged by 44 per cent during first seven months (July – January) of fiscal year 2022-2023, according to data released by central bank on Tuesday.

The data issued by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) revealed that FDI dropped to $683.5 million during first seven months of the current fiscal year as compared with $1.22 billion in the corresponding months of the last fiscal year.

Portfolio investment in equity securities, however, recorded massive fall of 95.5 per cent in outflows during the period under review.

The outflow in portfolio investment was $14 million during July – January 2022-2023 as compared with outflow of $307.6 million in the same period of the last fiscal year.

Total foreign private investment recorded a decline of 27 per cent to $669.5 million during the first seven months of the current fiscal year as compared with $917 million in the same period of the last fiscal year.

Meanwhile, foreign public investment recorded massive decline of 205 per cent during the period under review.

The foreign public investment recorded an outflow of $1.01 billion during first seven months of the current fiscal year as compared with inflows of $958 billion in the same months of the last fiscal year.

The net foreign investment into the country plunged by 118 per cent to outflow of $341 million during July – January 2022-2023 when compared with inflow of $1.87 billion in the same period of the last fiscal year.
