Foreign investment into Pakistan sharply decline by 112% in 8MFY23

KARACHI: Total foreign investment into Pakistan has sharply declined by 112 per cent during eight months (July – February) of fiscal year 2022-2023, according to data released by the central bank.

The date released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) revealed that the country recorded net outflow of $235 million during the first eight months of the current fiscal year as compared with the inflow of $1.91 billion in the corresponding months of the last fiscal year.

Foreign private investment into the country recorded a decline of 22.5 per cent to $776 million during the period under review as compared with $1 billion in the same period of the last fiscal year.

The country recorded foreign direct investment (FDI) at $784 million during July – February of 2022-2023 when compared with $1.32 billion in the corresponding period of the last fiscal year, showing a decline of over 40 per cent.

Portfolio investment recorded massive decline in outflow during the period. The outflow from the capital market was $8.4 million during first eight months of the current fiscal year as compared with an outflow of $315 million in the same period of the last fiscal year.

Debt securities under foreign public investment witnessed massive outflow of $1 billion during July – February 2022-2023 when compared with inflows of $905 million during the same period of the last fiscal year.
