France staged a remarkable comeback in the FIFA U-17 World Cup Indonesia 2023™ semi-final, overcoming an early deficit to defeat Mali 2-1.
The thrilling match unfolded with Ibrahim Diarra scoring for Mali just before halftime, breaking France’s defensive streak of more than 500 minutes in U-17 World Cup football.
The turning point came in the second half when Mali’s Souleymane Sanogo received a straight red card for a high challenge, shifting the momentum in France’s favor.
Seizing the opportunity, Ismail Bouneb delivered a precise free-kick that connected with Yvann Titi’s head, leveling the score at 1-1.
France completed their comeback just 13 minutes later when Bouneb showcased his skills again, this time converting a free-kick into a goal with a low, precise shot into the bottom corner. The 2-1 victory secured France’s place in the final against Germany.
Ismail Bouneb was named the Player of the Match for his pivotal role in France’s turnaround. The resilient Mali team, despite being reduced to ten men, continued to press for an equalizer, with a late free-kick from Hamidou Makalou narrowly denied by the French goalkeeper, Paul Argney, who touched the ball onto the crossbar.
The stage is set for an exciting final as France prepares to face Germany on Saturday, while Mali will battle Argentina for third place in Friday’s match.
