Google is rolling out a new Gemini minimise option that lets users keep the AI assistant accessible while switching between apps

Google is making it easier to multitask with Gemini on Android through a new option that turns the assistant’s full-screen overlay into a movable floating bubble.

The feature allows users to start a Gemini query, minimise the assistant and continue using their phone while Gemini works on the response in the background. The functionality is particularly useful when users need information while simultaneously messaging, browsing or performing another task.

How the Gemini Floating Bubble Works

Users can activate the Gemini overlay by long-pressing the power button or saying “Hey Google”. A new “Minimise” button appears above the main Gemini prompt bar.

After entering a question by voice or text, users can tap the button to shrink the overlay. Gemini then turns into a black floating bubble featuring the Gemini sparkle icon.

A message informs users that Gemini remains available while they multitask, with options to tap the bubble to expand it, drag it or dismiss it.

For example, a user could ask Gemini to research the value of a collectible baseball card, minimise the assistant and switch to a messaging app. Once the user has finished texting, tapping the floating Gemini bubble restores the assistant and displays the response.

This means users no longer need to remain inside the Gemini interface while waiting for an answer.

Gemini Bubble Has Limited Positions

The floating Gemini bubble can reportedly be placed in one of six predefined positions on an Android phone. Users can drag the bubble between these supported locations, although it cannot be positioned freely anywhere on the screen.

There is currently a bug affecting the feature that can force the bubble into the bottom-right corner after users press the minimise button.

The new functionality adds another layer of flexibility to Gemini on Android and could make Google’s AI assistant more convenient for users who frequently switch between apps.
