Google Maps version 26.44.4 introduces a redesigned interface for Apple’s foldable device, making better use of its larger inner display.
Google Maps has received full support for the iPhone Duo, Apple’s foldable smartphone, following the rollout of version 26.44.4. The update brings a redesigned interface that takes advantage of the device’s two displays, improving navigation and the overall user experience.
Although the iPhone Duo has been shipping for some time, several iOS applications have yet to adapt fully to its foldable design. Google Maps is now among the apps offering a layout specifically optimised for the device.
Google’s App Store release notes reportedly mention only bug fixes. However, users installing the latest version will notice changes to the application’s appearance and screen layout.
Previously, Google Maps appeared slightly offset to the left on the iPhone Duo’s outer display to accommodate the new iOS dock position. On the larger inner screen, the application retained its standard iPhone layout. Users could move it towards either side, but much of the available display space remained unused.
The latest update addresses this limitation by allowing Google Maps to fill both displays more effectively. While the changes to the outer screen are relatively minor, the redesigned inner-screen interface offers a more noticeable improvement.
Google Maps gets an iPad-style layout
When the iPhone Duo is unfolded, Google Maps now uses a wider interface. The search box and navigation menus appear on the left, while the map or satellite view extends across the remaining display.
The redesigned layout makes better use of the larger screen and provides an experience similar to Google Maps on the iPad. Users can view navigation controls and map details without sacrificing as much space.
Street View has also benefited from the update. By default, it occupies the left side of the inner display, leaving the right side available for the map. Although there does not appear to be an option to swap the two sections, users can expand Street View to fill the entire screen.
Another useful feature is the transition between displays. If users close the iPhone Duo while viewing Street View, the feature moves to the outer screen. A close button then allows them to return to the map.
The update makes Google Maps more practical on Apple’s foldable device, particularly for users who rely on its navigation, satellite imagery and Street View features.
