The new $180 wearable features an AMOLED display, GPS tracking, advanced health sensors and up to seven days of battery life.
Google has unveiled the Fitbit Edge, a new fitness tracker designed to offer a lighter and more affordable alternative to the Pixel Watch 5 while adding a display to the screenless Fitbit Air.
The Fitbit Edge features a 1.34-inch AMOLED display with always-on functionality. Its aluminium case measures 11.5mm thick and weighs 17.7 grams without the band, making it a lightweight option for everyday fitness tracking.
The device is positioned between Google’s smartwatch and its screenless fitness tracker, combining essential smart features with health and activity monitoring.
Display and Smart Features
Unlike the Pixel Watch 5, the Fitbit Edge does not run Wear OS. Instead, it uses a custom tile-based interface inspired by the Pixel Watch, with glanceable information and complications.
A physical button on the right side of the case allows users to navigate the interface. Supported features include Google Maps, media controls, call notifications, quick replies, alarms and timers.
The tracker also displays everyday information such as step counts, weather, sleep data and heart rate, allowing users to monitor their activity without relying on a full smartwatch experience.
Fitness Tracking and Health Sensors
The Fitbit Edge supports more than 50 exercise modes, alongside real-time guidance, GPS tracking and automatic activity detection.
For health monitoring, Google has equipped the device with red and infrared sensors for blood oxygen (SpO2) measurements, electrical sensors for electrocardiogram (ECG) readings and a photoplethysmography (PPG) optical heart-rate sensor. A far-field skin-temperature sensor is also included.
The tracker is powered by the Ambiq AP5 microcontroller, paired with 64MB of NOR flash memory. It carries an IP68 rating and is water-resistant to depths of up to 50 metres.
Battery Life, Price and Availability
Google has fitted the Fitbit Edge with a 65mAh battery, which the company claims can provide up to seven days of battery life under normal usage.
The tracker is available for pre-order in select regions at a starting price of $180. Colour options include Matte Black Aluminium with an Obsidian band, Satin Silver Aluminium with a Fog band, Satin Pyrite Aluminium with an Olive band, and Champagne Gold with a Canyon band.
Google is also offering a Stephen Curry Special Edition with a Satin Pyrite Aluminium case and a special band. This version costs $220.
The Fitbit Edge is scheduled to go on sale on October 27.
