Finance Ministry fixes compensation value based on 30,630 grams of silver under Pakistan Penal Code

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has fixed the value of diyat at Rs19,352,390 for the fiscal year 2026-27, according to a notification issued by the Ministry of Finance.

The notification was issued in pursuance of sub-section (2) of Section 323 of the Pakistan Penal Code (Act XLV of 1860), under which the federal government is required to determine the value of diyat each financial year.

According to the notification, the value of diyat for FY2026-27 has been fixed at Rs19,352,390 (Rupees Nineteen Million Three Hundred Fifty-Two Thousand Three Hundred Ninety Only).

The amount represents the value of 30,630 grams of silver, which serves as the statutory benchmark for calculating diyat under sub-section (1) of Section 323 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

What is diyat?

Diyat is financial compensation payable to the legal heirs of a victim in cases specified under Pakistan’s criminal laws. It is prescribed under the Pakistan Penal Code and forms part of the country’s legal framework governing offences involving death or bodily harm.

Under the law, the value of diyat is linked to the market value of 30,630 grams of silver, requiring the federal government to revise the amount annually in accordance with prevailing silver prices.

Annual revision

The Ministry of Finance issues the revised diyat value every financial year to ensure that the compensation amount reflects changes in silver prices while remaining consistent with the legal formula laid down in the Pakistan Penal Code.

The revised diyat amount of Rs19.35 million will remain applicable throughout FY2026-27, unless the federal government issues a subsequent notification amending the amount in accordance with the law.
