Islamabad, April 22, 2026 – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Wednesday that only government employees up to Basic Pay Scale (BPS) 16 will be eligible for electric bikes under a new easy installment scheme, as part of broader efforts to promote electric vehicle (EV) adoption in Pakistan.

The announcement came during a high-level meeting chaired by the prime minister to review progress on EV promotion initiatives. The move is aimed at encouraging a shift toward environmentally friendly transportation while easing the financial burden on public sector employees.

Officials informed the meeting that the government plans to convert 30% of vehicles in the country to electric power within the next five years. This transition is expected to save approximately $4.5 billion in fuel import costs, providing much-needed relief to Pakistan’s external account.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed relevant authorities to accelerate ongoing EV initiatives and ensure their timely implementation. He emphasized that the transition to electric mobility is crucial in light of rising energy demands and the country’s dependence on imported fuel.

“The promotion of electric vehicles will not only reduce the import bill but also contribute significantly to environmental protection and energy security,” the prime minister said.

He also underscored the importance of transparency in providing subsidies for electric motorbikes under the National EV Policy, particularly for low-income beneficiaries. Authorities were instructed to expedite the rollout of the scheme while ensuring fairness and accountability.

During the briefing, officials revealed that 72 manufacturing certificates have been issued for electric motorcycles and rickshaws, along with four for electric cars. Additionally, 123 applications have been received for establishing EV charging stations across the country.

The initiative reflects the government’s broader strategy to modernize Pakistan’s transport sector and promote sustainable energy solutions.
