New Ora 5 PHEV brings turbocharged power, LFP battery and advanced driver-assistance options
Great Wall Motor (GWM) is expanding the Ora 5 lineup with a new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), according to recently released filings from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
The upcoming model, which could be introduced as the Ora 5 GT, represents a major step for the Ora brand as it enters the plug-in hybrid segment for the first time. The new version is expected to complement the existing electric and hybrid variants of the Ora 5.
Larger Dimensions and Updated Design
The Ora 5 PHEV features a revised rear cargo section and a longer body compared with the standard model. It measures 4,758mm in length, while its width varies between 1,833mm and 1,844mm depending on the configuration.
The SUV stands 1,630mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,720mm. It retains a five-seat layout and uses a unibody construction, placing it within the compact SUV category.
At the front, the new PHEV largely maintains the styling of the standard Ora 5. At the rear, it gets a full-width taillight arrangement accompanied by GWM branding, giving the vehicle a distinctive appearance.
1.5T Engine and LFP Battery
The Ora 5 PHEV is equipped with GWM’s Hi2 plug-in hybrid technology and uses the company’s GW4B15M 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine.
The engine produces a rated output of 115kW, equivalent to around 154 horsepower. The vehicle has a reported top speed of 190km/h.
Unlike several other GWM new-energy models that use batteries supplied by its subsidiary Svolt, the Ora 5 PHEV will reportedly feature a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery supplied by CATL.
Advanced Technology Options
MIIT filings also reveal several optional features, particularly for higher-end variants. These may include LiDAR, front and side radars, side cameras and an advanced intelligent driving assistance system.
Buyers could also receive multiple exterior customisation options, including different wheel designs, exterior mirrors, side-window trims and roof configurations.
Ora Brand Records Strong Sales
The new PHEV arrives as Ora continues to strengthen its sales performance in China. Data from China EV DataTracker shows that Ora models recorded more than 10,000 units each over the past two months, with year-on-year growth of 229.2% and 151.6%.
The addition of the Ora 5 PHEV could further expand GWM’s electrified lineup and give the brand a stronger presence in the growing plug-in hybrid SUV market.
