Harry Brook Appointed England’s New White-Ball Captain

London, April 7, 2025 – In a significant development for English cricket, Harry Brook has officially been appointed as the new captain of England’s white-ball teams, succeeding Jos Buttler, who stepped down after a disastrous ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) made the announcement on Monday, entrusting the 26-year-old with the task of revitalizing the national side in One Day Internationals (ODIs) and T20 Internationals (T20Is).

Brook, who has been a key figure in England’s white-ball setup since 2022, brings with him a wealth of experience despite his young age. Having already served as vice-captain in both formats over the past year, Brook’s leadership credentials were further solidified when he stood in for Buttler against Australia last September, drawing praise for his composed demeanor and sharp tactical approach.

“It’s a real honour to be named England’s white-ball captain,” said Brook in a statement released by the ECB. “I’ve always dreamt of this moment—from playing at Burley in Wharfedale as a kid to captaining my country. I’m grateful for the support of my family and coaches, and now I look forward to building a winning culture and competing for World Cups.”

Brook’s cricketing journey includes captaining the England U19 team during the 2018 Men’s U19 World Cup. Currently ranked number two in the ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings, he has emerged as one of the most dependable and aggressive batters in the English lineup across formats.

Buttler’s stint as captain had its highs, most notably leading England to victory in the 2022 T20 World Cup. However, back-to-back failures in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup, followed by a winless Champions Trophy campaign in 2025, led to increased pressure and his eventual resignation. While stepping down from leadership, Buttler confirmed his commitment to continue playing across all formats.

Brook’s first assignment as skipper will be a home white-ball series against the West Indies, beginning May 29, followed by another key series against South Africa in September. England fans and management will be eager to see how Brook shapes the next chapter of England’s white-ball journey.
