Joint initiative aims to modernise Pakistan’s tax framework to drive sustainable economic growth.
ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Finance and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have convened a two-day high-level workshop on “Reforms for a Modern and Growth-Friendly Tax System in Pakistan” on 20–21 October 2026.
The event brings together senior government officials, international tax experts, private-sector leaders, and representatives from the IMF and World Bank. Key speakers at the opening included Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, alongside IMF Directors Jihad Azour and Rodrigo Valdés.
The workshop features six targeted sessions examining crucial areas such as fiscal federalism, provincial tax revenues, and the establishment of a unified sales tax regime across federal and provincial entities. Delegates are evaluating strategies to streamline income tax structures and align tax administration with global best practices through digital transformation, enhanced taxpayer trust, and improved compliance.
The central objective is to design a broader, fairer, and more predictable tax system that supports domestic revenue mobilisation, encourages investment, and fuels long-term productivity.
The initiative will conclude with a high-level panel aimed at consolidating recommendations, defining immediate priority steps, and establishing ongoing collaboration among key stakeholders. This joint effort highlights the government’s ongoing commitment to restructuring national finances and fostering an efficient, growth-oriented economy.
