Shubman Gill’s unbeaten 223 and Rohit Sharma’s century powered India to an eight-wicket victory over West Indies in Guwahati.
India produced a remarkable batting display on Wednesday, September 30, defeating West Indies by eight wickets in the second ODI at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati. The hosts successfully chased 406 in just 43.3 overs, with 39 balls remaining, securing an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
West Indies had earlier posted 405/7, their highest-ever ODI total. John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo all scored centuries, giving the visitors a commanding platform. Hope’s hundred was also his 20th in ODI cricket, moving him past Brian Lara for the second-most ODI centuries by a West Indies batter, behind Chris Gayle.
India, however, responded with an extraordinary run chase. Captain Shubman Gill led the assault with an unbeaten 223 from 133 deliveries, striking 26 fours and eight sixes. He reached his double century from only 117 balls, setting a new record for the fastest ODI double century. The previous mark belonged to Ishan Kishan, who reached 200 from 126 balls against Bangladesh.
Gill’s innings also made him only the second batter after Rohit Sharma to score multiple ODI double centuries. His latest performance followed his 208 against New Zealand in 2023. He also registered the highest individual score in an ODI run chase, surpassing Glenn Maxwell’s unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan.
Rohit Sharma Adds Another Century
Rohit Sharma provided outstanding support at the other end, scoring 101 from 72 balls. The opening pair added 255 runs before Rohit departed, giving India a dominant start to the chase. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Virat Kohli then helped Gill take India across the finishing line.
The match also produced five centuries in total, while the combined score of 811 runs placed the game among the highest-scoring ODIs ever recorded. West Indies’ 405 was their first 400-plus total in ODI cricket, while India’s successful chase became the second-highest in the format’s history, behind South Africa’s famous 438-run chase against Australia in 2006.
With one match still remaining, India have already sealed the ODI series 2-0.
