Shubman Gill to lead both formats as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli included in ODI squad for Afghanistan series

India have announced squads for a one-off Test and a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, with Shubman Gill set to continue as captain across both formats.

KL Rahul has been named vice-captain for the Test match, while Shreyas Iyer returns to the ODI squad and will serve as Gill’s deputy in the 50-over format.

The selectors have opted to rest fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah as part of workload management following a packed international schedule.

Senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been included in the ODI squad, although their participation will depend on fitness clearance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Kohli recently reiterated his commitment to playing through to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.

India have also handed maiden call-ups to Harsh Dubey, Gurnoor Brar, and Prince Yadav, all of whom have been included in the ODI setup.

The squad announcement comes as India return to international action following their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 triumph at home and the conclusion of the Indian Premier League season.
