Liverpool remain unbeaten but winless after rescuing another point, with Andoni Iraola demanding greater intensity ahead of their next league fixture.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has remained positive about his team’s progress despite the Reds opening the new Premier League campaign with two consecutive draws.
Liverpool twice came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Saturday. The result followed another 2-2 stalemate against Newcastle United in their opening league fixture, leaving the club unbeaten but still searching for its first victory.
Iraola was appointed during the summer as Liverpool looked to rebuild after a disappointing previous campaign. The club had entered last season as defending champions but eventually finished fifth, despite spending a Premier League-record £446 million on new signings.
The Spanish coach is attempting to introduce a more aggressive style built around attacking quickly, maintaining a high tempo and applying sustained pressure. His approach represents a shift toward the intense football associated with Liverpool’s previous era under Jürgen Klopp.
However, the transformation has yet to fully take shape. Nottingham Forest capitalised on Liverpool’s weaknesses on the counterattack, with Dan Ndoye putting the visitors ahead. Iraola was also unhappy with his team’s lack of urgency during much of the opening half.
Liverpool responded strongly after the interval, increasing their intensity and moving the ball more quickly. Alexander Isak brought the hosts level in the 60th minute before Morgan Gibbs-White restored Forest’s advantage 10 minutes later.
Victor Munoz eventually rescued Liverpool with an impressive strike eight minutes before the end of normal time. The winger had also played a key role in Liverpool’s opening-day draw at Newcastle, winning the late penalty that helped his side claim a point.
Iraola praised Munoz for his consistent effort and contribution at both ends of the pitch, particularly highlighting the winger’s attacking threat and defensive work.
Despite the frustrating results, Iraola believes Liverpool’s tactical transition requires patience. He acknowledged that points and victories ultimately remain the priority but was encouraged by his side’s second-half performance.
Liverpool will now have time to regroup before travelling to face Ipswich Town on September 5, when Iraola’s side will aim to secure its first Premier League win of the season.
