PMD forecasts thunderstorms and rain-windstorms in Islamabad as a westerly trough approaches western and upper Pakistan.
ISLAMABAD, September 27, 2026: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain-windstorms and thunderstorms in Islamabad and surrounding areas as a westerly weather system approaches the western and upper parts of the country.
According to the PMD’s National Weather Forecasting Centre, dry weather is expected in Islamabad on Sunday, although partly cloudy conditions are likely during the afternoon.
The weather may turn unsettled at night, with rain-windstorms and thunderstorms likely to develop, carrying a 40 per cent probability.
On Monday, Islamabad and adjoining areas are expected to remain partly cloudy, while rain-windstorms and thunderstorms are forecast during the morning, with a probability of 45 per cent.
Westerly trough approaching Pakistan
The PMD said dry continental air is currently prevailing over most parts of the country. However, a westerly trough is expected to approach the western and upper regions from Sunday evening or night, potentially triggering thunderstorms and rainfall in several areas.
At the national level, most plain areas are expected to remain hot and dry.
However, rain-windstorms and thunderstorms are likely in central and southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, upper and central Punjab and the Potohar region during Sunday evening and night.
The weather department warned that heavy rain and hailstorms could occur at isolated locations during the period.
Light rain and thunderstorms are also possible at isolated places in Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir.
Rain and thunderstorms expected on Monday
The PMD has forecast broadly similar conditions for Monday, with hot and dry weather expected across most plain areas.
Rain-windstorms and thunderstorms are likely in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, upper and central Punjab and the Potohar region.
The department again warned of isolated instances of heavy rain and hailstorms.
Light rain and thunderstorms are also expected at isolated locations in Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir.
Weather remains hot in plains
The PMD said dry weather prevailed over most parts of Pakistan during the past 24 hours, while temperatures remained high across the country’s plain areas.
The highest maximum temperatures recorded on Saturday were 42°C in Sibi and Turbat, while Shaheed Benazirabad and Sakrand recorded 41°C.
The approaching westerly trough is expected to bring a temporary change in weather conditions across parts of northern and central Pakistan, particularly Islamabad, the Potohar region, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
