India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka’s Asitha Fernando were each fined 25% of their match fee and given one demerit point.

COLOMBO: India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka fast bowler Asitha Fernando have been sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following a confrontation during the opening day of the second ICC World Test Championship fixture in Colombo.

Both players were found guilty of breaching Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which covers inappropriate physical contact involving players, match officials, support personnel or other individuals during an international match.

Jaiswal and Fernando were each fined 25% of their match fee and received one demerit point.

The ICC said neither player had committed an offence during the previous 24 months.

Jaiswal, Fernando clash after dismissal

The incident occurred during the 17th over of India’s innings after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal.

The Indian batter walked towards the Sri Lankan bowler and the two exchanged words. Fernando then moved his head towards Jaiswal, prompting the India batter to lean forward, resulting in contact between their heads.

Both players admitted the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees.

As the players accepted the charges and proposed penalties, no formal hearing was required.

India in strong position in Colombo Test

The disciplinary action came as India and Sri Lanka continued an intense contest in the second Test of their series in Colombo.

Rain interrupted play during the second session on day two, with India reaching 475 for eight.

India batter Dhruv Jurel remained unbeaten on 95, leaving him five runs short of his second Test century.

India-Sri Lanka Test series

The two-match series began with the first Test in Galle from August 15 to 19, where India secured a 165-run victory.

The second Test is being played in Colombo from August 23 to 27.

The series forms part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship fixtures.
