The filmmaker confirms principal photography has concluded on the highly anticipated sequel to 2025’s Superman.

James Gunn has announced an exciting update on his upcoming DC movie Superman: Man of Tomorrow, confirming that filming on the highly anticipated sequel has officially wrapped.

The American filmmaker shared the news on his Threads account on Wednesday, revealing that the production has completed principal photography.

“That’s a wrap on principal photography for Man of Tomorrow,” Gunn wrote, while expressing his gratitude to the cast and crew who worked on the project.

Superman: Man of Tomorrow will serve as the follow-up to Gunn’s 2025 Superman movie and is currently scheduled to arrive in cinemas on July 9, 2027.

The completion of principal photography marks an important milestone for the upcoming DC Studios project, which has generated significant anticipation among fans following the success of the first film.

Gunn previously opened up about the challenges of making Superman, describing it as the hardest movie he had ever made. Speaking on the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, the filmmaker explained that the pressure surrounding the project was particularly intense because Superman is one of the most recognisable characters in popular culture.

Gunn compared the experience with making the first Guardians of the Galaxy, which he said involved creating a relatively unfamiliar corner of the Marvel universe. With Superman, however, the challenge was different because audiences already had strong ideas about the character.

The filmmaker explained that he was effectively reorienting a character that audiences around the world already believed they understood.

Gunn also noted that Superman was the most comic-book-driven project he had worked on, adding another layer of complexity to the production.

According to Gunn, expectations surrounding the movie extended beyond the character himself, with significant attention focused on DC Studios and the wider DC Universe.

 “Everyone in the world thinks something different about Superman. Everybody knows who he is,” Gunn previously said, acknowledging the pressure placed on the project.

With filming for Superman: Man of Tomorrow now complete, the production will move into its post-production phase ahead of its planned 2027 theatrical release.
