Jasprit Bumrah Reprimanded by ICC for Code of Conduct Breach

Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has found himself on the receiving end of an official reprimand from the International Cricket Council (ICC) for a breach of Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the gripping fourth day of the first Test between India and England in Hyderabad.

The incident unfolded in the 81st over of England’s second innings when Bumrah, in a move that raised eyebrows, intentionally obstructed Ollie Pope as he attempted to complete a run. The result was an inappropriate physical contact between the two players, prompting the match officials to take action.

Upon review, Bumrah was found to have violated Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. This particular article pertains to “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person including a spectator during an International Match.”

As part of the disciplinary consequences, Bumrah has been handed one demerit point. Notably, this is his first offense within a 24-month period, and thus, the addition of the demerit point serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining decorum on the field.

The charge against Bumrah was lodged by the on-field umpires, Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, along with third umpire Marais Erasmus and fourth umpire Rohan Pandit. Their vigilance and commitment to upholding the integrity of the game led to the swift acknowledgment of the breach.

In accordance with the ICC regulations, Level 1 breaches typically carry a range of penalties. These penalties include a minimum punishment of an official reprimand, a maximum fine equivalent to 50 percent of the player’s match fee, and the imposition of one or two demerit points.

In an admirable display of sportsmanship and accountability, Bumrah pleaded guilty to the offense. This acceptance of responsibility showcases the maturity and professionalism expected of players at the international level.

Consequently, the proceedings did not necessitate a formal hearing, as Bumrah willingly embraced the sanctions imposed upon him.

The sanctioning process was overseen by Richie Richardson, a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. Bumrah’s acceptance of the reprimand reflects a commitment to learning from the incident and moving forward with a renewed focus on fair play and adherence to the established codes of conduct.
