The Emmy-winning actress will reprise her role as real estate agent Karen Calhoun as production on the long-awaited second season prepares to begin in New York.

Jennifer Coolidge is returning for the second season of Netflix’s thriller series The Watcher, reprising her role as Karen Calhoun, the real estate agent who sold the Brannock family the house at the centre of their nightmare.

Netflix confirmed the casting news, which Variety reported on October 8. Production on the new season is scheduled to begin this autumn in New York.

Coolidge joins previously announced returning cast members Naomi Watts, Bobby Cannavale and Isabel Gravitt, who portray members of the Brannock family, alongside Margo Martindale, who plays their neighbour Maureen.

The upcoming season will follow the Brannocks after the events of the first season’s finale. However, Netflix has not revealed details of Karen’s storyline or announced a premiere date.

In the first season, Karen was a friend of Nora Brannock and urged the couple to sell their property as threatening letters continued to arrive. She eventually bought the house and later sold it, leaving the mystery surrounding the property unresolved.

Following the series’ debut in 2022, Coolidge said she believed her character deserved consequences, remarking that Karen “needs to be punished”.

Jennifer Coolidge returns to Netflix thriller

Coolidge’s return comes after her acclaimed performance in HBO’s The White Lotus, for which she won two Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe. She secured her first Emmy for the series shortly before The Watcher premiered in 2022.

Created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, who also serves as showrunner, The Watcher is loosely based on a true story about a family subjected to disturbing letters after moving into a new home.

The series became a major Netflix hit, spending five weeks on the platform’s global Top 10 English-language television chart.

Netflix renewed the thriller in November 2022, but the second season has taken several years to move forward.

It remains unclear whether other members of the original cast, including Mia Farrow, Richard Kind and Christopher McDonald, will return for the new instalment.

With Coolidge back on board, the upcoming season is expected to revisit the unsettling mystery that made the first instalment a popular title among Netflix viewers.
