According to media reports, the utility has started phased one-hour power cuts across several areas, including neighbourhoods previously exempt from scheduled load-shedding.

KARACHI: K-Electric has reportedly begun implementing phased load-shedding across Karachi as its power system faces pressure from an alleged shortage of liquefied natural gas (LNG), according to media reports.

The reports said the utility had shut down feeders connected to several grid stations because of an overloaded electricity network, raising concerns about disruptions to power supplies in different parts of the city.

According to media reports, K-Electric has started one-hour power cuts in phases to manage electricity demand and maintain the stability of its system.

Several Areas Reportedly Affected

The reported outages affect multiple areas of Karachi, including Saddar, Clifton, Defence Housing Authority (DHA) and Korangi.

Residents of Orangi, Liaquatabad, North Karachi and North Nazimabad are also reportedly facing power cuts. Other areas mentioned in the reports include Malir, Landhi, SITE, Baldia, Maripur, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Scheme 33, the Old City Area and Razzaqabad.

The reports said the phased outages were being carried out on feeders connected to various grid stations as part of the utility’s reported load-management measures.

Load-Shedding-Free Areas Also Affected

According to media reports, the power cuts have also extended to some areas previously exempt from scheduled load-shedding.

The reported development has raised concerns among consumers who generally expect uninterrupted electricity supplies in those neighbourhoods.

The reports attributed the pressure on K-Electric’s power system partly to an LNG shortage, which has reportedly affected the utility’s ability to maintain electricity supplies without interruptions.

The extent and duration of the outages may vary across different parts of Karachi. However, the information provided in the reports did not include an official statement from K-Electric confirming the reported LNG shortage, feeder closures or the duration of the load-management measures.

Consumers have been advised to follow official updates from the utility for information about power supply conditions in their respective areas.
