Karachi experiences 80% humidity amid windstorm forecast

Karachi, May 5, 2025 – The residents of Karachi are experiencing unusually high levels of humidity as temperatures rise, creating an uncomfortable and stifling atmosphere across the city.

Humidity levels have climbed to as much as 80%, making the air feel significantly warmer than the actual temperature and causing discomfort, especially during the early morning hours.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Karachi is expected to face a windstorm later today, accompanied by light rain. The weather has turned increasingly humid over the past 24 hours, and meteorologists warn that conditions may worsen before they improve. The excessive humidity has made the air heavy and oppressive, a common prelude to storm activity in coastal regions like Karachi.

Forecasts from AccuWeather indicate that during the early hours of Monday, temperatures in Karachi hovered around 28°C, but the RealFeel® temperature was closer to 32°C, due to the high humidity. Winds blowing from the west-southwest at 13 km/h are expected to pick up as the day progresses, potentially bringing gusts up to 17 km/h. Despite relatively clear skies with minimal cloud cover and good visibility, the city is under alert for a windstorm later in the day.

At 3:00 AM, the humidity stood at 78%, with indoor humidity levels matching the same figure, indicating extremely humid conditions even inside homes and buildings. The dew point was recorded at 24°C, contributing to the muggy feel across the city. An hour later, at 4:00 AM, there was little change, as Karachi remained under heavy humidity and still, warm air.

By 5:00 AM, skies were mostly clear but the RealFeel® temperature remained elevated, maintaining discomfort among early risers. Karachi’s coastal geography makes it especially prone to such weather patterns, where warm temperatures are amplified by persistent humidity.

Citizens are advised to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activity during peak heat hours, and secure any loose objects that could be displaced by strong winds. With the PMD forecasting a windstorm and possible light rain, residents should prepare for brief but potentially intense weather changes throughout the day.
